About Your Role As a Deli Supervisor at Columbus IGA, you are a working supervisor responsible for leading the Deli team during closing shifts and weekends while actively performing the responsibilities of a Deli Clerk. You provide on-shift direction, support, and accountability to ensure exceptional customer service, product quality, food safety, cleanliness, and operational standards are consistently maintained. This role serves as the primary Deli leadership presence Thursday through Monday during closing operations and works closely with the Deli Manager to ensure effective communication and continuity between shifts. Duties and Responsibilities The essential duties and responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, the following: - Shift Leadership and Team Supervision Provides day-to-day leadership and direction to Deli team members during assigned closing and weekend shifts, including coordinating workflow, assigning priorities, providing guidance, addressing immediate operational concerns, and holding team members accountable to established expectations. - Working Supervisor and Deli Operations Functions as an active member of the Deli team by performing Deli Clerk responsibilities alongside team members, including food preparation, packaging, stocking, merchandising, and customer service, while balancing supervisory responsibilities and overall shift needs. - Closing Operations and Shift Accountability Oversees closing procedures to ensure required work is completed accurately and timely, including department cleanup, sanitation, product storage, equipment shutdown, stocking, organization, and preparation of the department for the following business day. - Food Quality, Safety, and Sanitation Ensures team compliance with established recipes, portion and product-quality standards, food handling requirements, sanitation procedures, and workplace safety expectations while addressing or reporting concerns when standards are not met. - Customer Service and Issue Resolution Promotes a positive customer experience by modeling exceptional service, assisting customers, supporting team members with customer needs, and appropriately resolving or escalating concerns that arise during the shift. - Team Performance and Communication Provides timely coaching and feedback to team members regarding performance, teamwork, attendance, conduct, and adherence to department expectations, while communicating significant concerns, incidents, staffing needs, and follow-up items to the Deli Manager. - Merchandising, Inventory, and Operational Support Supports product availability, freshness, rotation, merchandising, inventory control, and shrink-reduction efforts while ensuring the department remains organized, adequately stocked, and prepared to meet customer and operational needs. Supervisory Responsibilities - The position has immediate oversight of team members most of the time performing the same or directly related work as those the position leads. Minimum Qualifications - High school diploma or equivalent preferred. - Must be 18 years of age or older. - Previous deli, food service, grocery, or related retail experience required; previous lead or supervisory experience preferred. - Obtain ServSafe Certification within one year of hire and maintain required food safety knowledge and practices. - Demonstrated ability to lead by example, provide direction to team members, address performance or operational concerns, and exercise sound judgment with limited supervision. - Ability to provide courteous, professional customer service and effectively resolve customer and team member concerns in a fast-paced retail environment. - Working knowledge of, or demonstrated ability to learn, food preparation, food safety, sanitation, product quality, and deli operational standards. - Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize responsibilities and coordinate the work of others while performing Deli Clerk duties. - Ability to stand for extended periods and perform the physical requirements of the position, including lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling as required, with or without reasonable accommodation. - Ability to consistently work the established Thursday through Monday schedule, including 8.5-hour closing shifts, weekends, and applicable holidays. Work Environment and Physical Demands This position operates in a fast-paced retail grocery and food service environment with frequent interaction with customers and coworkers. Work is primarily performed within the deli department and may include exposure to coolers, freezers, food preparation areas, hot equipment, cleaning products, and varying temperatures. The Deli Supervisor is expected to maintain a professional, helpful, and respectful demeanor while balancing hands-on deli responsibilities with shift supervision. - Work Schedule: Regularly scheduled Thursday through Monday for 8.5-hour closing shifts. The position requires consistent evening and weekend availability and may include holidays based on store operating needs. - Physical Requirements: - Standing and walking for extended periods throughout the scheduled shift. - Frequent bending, twisting, reaching, pushing, pulling, and repetitive hand and arm movements. - Regularly lifting and moving products up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. - Safely operating deli and store equipment, including slicers, food preparation equipment, carts, and pallet jacks, as required. - Working in environments with varying temperatures, including coolers, freezers, and warm food preparation areas. The position requires the ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain awareness of department operations, follow established food and workplace safety procedures, and respond appropriately to customer, employee, and operational needs throughout the shift.
