About the role

The Wrangler II plays a critical role in the daily care, training support, and public presentation of horses and livestock. This position requires intermediate knowledge in horse health, anatomy, riding and driving, shoeing, equipment handling, and reproduction basics. Working closely with the head trainer or manager, this role also supports on- and off-site events and operates a range of heavy equipment used in barn and field operations.   Essential Functions: - Provide daily horse care including feeding, grooming, saddling, harnessing, and cleaning stalls. - Identify and respond to signs of illness, lameness, and injury in horses. - Ride and drive horses in training programs as assigned by the head trainer or manager. - Assist in public events and performances both on-site and off-site. - Operate, maintain, and assist in repairs of barns, paddocks, and related equipment. - Support facility upkeep including cleaning, fence repair, and light construction. - Participate in basic shoeing and hoof care tasks under guidance. - Understand and assist with reproductive and birthing processes. - Apply advanced horse care techniques, including use of Bemer and Thera Plate therapy systems. - Operate tractors, telehandlers, forklifts, wagons, and horse-drawn equipment. - Maintain a valid Class A CDL for hauling horses and equipment when needed. - Communicate proactively with trainers regarding horse condition, training progress, and preventive care recommendations. - Assist with lawn and grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, edging, weed control, and general upkeep. - Support the operation, inspection, and basic maintenance of irrigation systems and report issues or needed repairs.   Skills & Qualifications: - Intermediate horsemanship and horse handling skills (ride, drive, groom, harness). - Understanding of horse anatomy, common injuries, and preventive care. - Familiarity with equine therapy tools (e.g., Bemer, Thera Plate). - Ability to support and execute training regimens under supervision. - Strong teamwork and communication skills. - Ability to work independently and make informed decisions in the absence of direct supervision. - Competency in operating and maintaining farm and heavy equipment.   Required Education and Experience: - High school diploma or equivalent. - Minimum 2–4 years of hands-on horse handling experience in a professional setting. - One year of experience in a wrangler, stable hand, or barn technician role. - A combination of education and experience may be considered.   Preferred Education and Experience: - Completion of KPA or other horsemanship-specific training or certification programs. - Basic farrier experience or training. - Experience supporting foaling and breeding processes. - Valid Telehandler certification or willingness to obtain upon hire. - Experience working in live performance or public demonstration settings.   Supervisory Responsibility: This job does not have supervisory responsibilities. Work Environment: This job operates in an agricultural setting. The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud due to machinery. Exposure to various outdoor elements such as dust, animals, and plants is common. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This position requires the incumbent to be physically present at the assigned worksite. The regular schedule is typically based on seasonal demands and may include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Employees are also expected to work at least one non-convention farm event a year and to work at the annual company convention. Exact hour requirements can be reasonably modified as necessary for the business needs by the employee’s manager. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Specific vision abilities of this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, lift, and move items up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
