Build it. Connect it. Fix it. Keep people connected. At GBT, keeping people connected takes more than fiber and technology. It takes people who are willing to get outside, get their hands dirty, solve problems, and build something that matters. We’re looking for an Outside Plant Technician / Construction Technician to join our team. This is a hands-on position that combines telecommunications construction, outside plant maintenance, equipment operation, and customer service. You might spend one day operating a boring machine or cable plow, another locating underground utilities, and another helping install or repair services for a residential or business customer. If you like variety, working with your hands, operating equipment, solving problems, and seeing the results of your work at the end of the day, this could be your kind of job. What You’ll Do You’ll help build, maintain, and repair the infrastructure that keeps our customers connected. Construction & Outside Plant - Install, repair, and maintain communication infrastructure according to staking sheets, maps, drawings, and company standards - Perform daily construction activities associated with installing and repairing outside plant facilities - Operate construction equipment such as cable plows, boring machines, trenchers, backhoes, skid loaders, tractors, and trucks - Locate existing underground utilities using manual and electronic locating equipment - Install and repair customer drop wires, station protection, network interface devices, and other outside plant facilities - Assist with maintenance and repair of the network from the central office to the customer premise - Perform plant maintenance, cutovers, and scheduled plant activities - Assist other technicians with installation and maintenance of GBT products and services Customer Service & Technology - Install and repair company services and equipment for residential and business customers - Install and maintain customer premise equipment, including modems, ONTs, residential gateways, set-top boxes, batteries, and related equipment - Communicate professionally with customers and coworkers and help ensure GBT’s customer service commitments are met - Explain basic equipment and service information to customers when needed - Use company software to update service orders, track inventory, enter time, and document completed work Safety & Teamwork - Follow GBT safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices - Attend and participate in safety and other training programs - Properly use required personal protective equipment and help ensure laborers and coworkers follow appropriate PPE practices - Operate construction equipment according to manufacturer recommendations and company procedures - Complete required paperwork, job notes, inventory checkouts, and other documentation - Maintain and operate company vehicles and equipment responsibly - Assist coworkers and other departments when needed to get the job done What You Bring You don’t necessarily need to know everything about telecommunications on day one. We’re looking for someone who is dependable, mechanically minded, safety-conscious, willing to learn, and comfortable working outdoors and with equipment. Experience in any of the following can be valuable: - Telecommunications or outside plant construction - Utility construction - Electrical work - Heavy equipment operation - Excavation or underground utility work - Fiber or cable installation - Farming or agricultural equipment - Automotive or mechanical work - Construction or skilled trades You should also be able to: - Read and follow maps, staking sheets, drawings, and written instructions - Safely operate or learn to operate construction equipment - Work outdoors in a variety of Kansas weather conditions - Work independently while also being a dependable team member - Communicate professionally with customers and coworkers - Troubleshoot problems and think through practical solutions - Maintain accurate records and complete required documentation - Follow safety procedures and recognize potentially unsafe conditions - Obtain and maintain any required licenses or certifications for the position New to Telecom? That's OK. If you have experience working with equipment, construction, utilities, agriculture, mechanics, or another hands-on trade, we want to hear from you. We can teach you the telecom side of the job. What we can’t easily teach is a strong work ethic, dependability, willingness to learn, and the satisfaction of looking at something you built and thinking, **“Yep, I did that.”** Why GBT? At GBT, you aren’t just digging holes or fixing equipment. You’re helping build and maintain the infrastructure that connects homes, businesses, and communities. You’ll work with modern telecommunications technology while also getting to do what many people miss about work: being outside, working with your hands, operating equipment, solving real problems, and seeing tangible results. And there’s plenty of opportunity to learn along the way. GBT offers: - Full family health insurance options - Outstanding pension plan with a 20%+ employer contribution - Competitive pay - Opportunities for professional growth and training - Free Internet & TV, as well as a cell phone stipend - A stable, member-driven cooperative with a long-term focus - A team-oriented work environment - The opportunity to learn valuable skills in telecommunications, construction, fiber, equipment operation, and outside plant infrastructure Ready to Build Something? If you’re the person who would rather figure out how to fix it than walk past it, enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in doing a job right, and likes having a different challenge every day, we’d like to meet you. Bring your construction experience. Bring your equipment skills. Bring your mechanical know-how. Or bring your willingness to learn. There’s a place for all of it at GBT. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship. $60,000-$80,000/year(this figure includes wages and employer-provided benefits).
