Do you have experience across multiple trades and take pride in completing quality work that makes a difference in the day-to-day environment of a campus community?
Drew University is seeking a General Maintenance Technician to join our Facilities team in Madison, New Jersey. This position offers the opportunity to apply your practical maintenance skills across a variety of campus buildings and facilities. Working as part of a dedicated Facilities team, you'll have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of maintenance needs rather than performing the same tasks every day. We're looking for a dependable, adaptable individual with a solid foundation in general maintenance and the ability to identify problems, find solutions, and respond to the needs of the campus community.
What You'll Do
As a General Maintenance Technician, you'll take a hands-on role in maintaining campus buildings, addressing everyday maintenance needs, and responding to building system issues.

- Perform routine repairs and maintenance, including addressing leaks and clogs, replacing lamps, ballasts and ceiling tiles, patching and painting, and completing minor building repairs.
- Assist with furniture moves, hanging items, minor pest-related concerns, and other general campus maintenance needs.
Building Systems & Preventative Maintenance
- Help maintain University buildings and building systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, life safety, building envelope, and access systems.
- Perform preventative maintenance, identify potential issues, and follow appropriate safety procedures and industry standards.
Work Coordination & Operations
- Coordinate and inspect outside contractor work as assigned.
- Maintain tools, equipment, materials, and parts inventory, and complete work orders, maintenance forms, and other required documentation.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for a versatile maintenance professional who enjoys working with their hands, can troubleshoot everyday building issues, and is comfortable taking on a variety of tasks. The ideal candidate has experience across multiple trades, works well independently and as part of a team, and takes pride in providing responsive service to the campus community.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED and 3–5 years of experience in a maintenance or skilled trades field.
- Valid U.S. driver's license and ability to operate automobiles, vans, light trucks, and utility vehicles.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to use computers, email, telephones, and two-way radios.
Core Technical Skills:
- Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, with the ability to diagnose and repair common building issues.
- Ability to organize assignments, manage time effectively, adapt to changing priorities, and maintain a customer-focused approach.
- Ability to work outdoors and in varying environmental conditions.
- Physical ability to walk throughout campus, bend, stoop, climb ladders, and lift and carry up to 50 pounds, including up and down stairs.
- Willingness to work occasional overtime and provide weekend and holiday coverage when scheduled.
