Yugabyte is the company behind YugabyteDB, the AI-ready, multi-modal, distributed PostgreSQL database for cloud-native apps. Trusted by industry leaders including Shopify, Paramount+, GM, Kroger, Fiserv, and NPCI, YugabyteDB has been deployed in over 100 countries and powers more than 5 million clusters worldwide. Together, our hard-working team of experts and our industry-leading technology are uniquely positioned to meet the demands of modern workloads: geo-distributed, ultra-resilient, and built to scale without limits. At Yugabyte, we are on a mission to build an open source, high-performance, distributed, and fault-tolerant PostgreSQL-compatible database for powering global, internet-scale applications. Our Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) organization brings YugabyteDB to customers wherever they run: as a fully managed service on the major clouds with YugabyteDB Aeon, inside their own cloud accounts with Aeon BYOC, in their own data centers and Kubernetes environments with YugabyteDB Anywhere, and on a developer's laptop with yugabyted. As the VP of Engineering for DBaaS, you will lead the teams that build, ship, and run every way customers consume YugabyteDB as a service. You will own the roadmap delivery, quality, and operation of YugabyteDB Aeon, Aeon BYOC, YugabyteDB Anywhere, and yugabyted. You will work across a modern cloud stack: Kubernetes on GKE, EKS, and AKS, Java frameworks, Python and shell automation, Terraform, and observability tooling across AWS, GCP, and Azure. You will be the executive owner of production for Aeon, setting the standard for incident response, on-call health, and the reliability our customers count on. You will also own the Security and SRE charters for the DBaaS organization. That includes product and cloud security, vulnerability management, compliance programs such as SOC 2, and the SRE practices that keep Aeon highly available, performant, and cost-efficient around the clock. You will take responsibility for the resiliency, security, and cost of the architectural choices made across the organization, and stay close enough to the technology to lead design reviews and major incidents with your engineers. You will lead a global organization of engineers, managers, and SREs across several geographies reporting to the SVP of Engineering. You will hire and grow strong leaders, mentor and assess your managers, and build an organization where people do their best work and stay for the long run. You will partner closely with Product, the core database team, Support, and the field, and represent engineering to the executive team. We are looking for a leader who exemplifies collaboration, teamwork, and empathy, and who leads by example. We enjoy working with people who are driven, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and want to build an internet-scale, extensible database platform with a strong emphasis on simplicity and user experience. Responsibilities - Lead and grow the DBaaS engineering organization, including hiring, mentoring, performance reviews, and developing the next generation of engineering leaders - Own delivery of the roadmap for YugabyteDB Aeon, Aeon BYOC, YugabyteDB Anywhere, and yugabyted, in partnership with Product - Own the availability, performance, and cost efficiency of YugabyteDB Aeon, using SLOs and SRE golden signals to guide priorities - Establish and lead the process for incident response, postmortems, and on-call across databases and infrastructure - Lead the Security charter, including secure design, encryption and key management, vulnerability management, and compliance certifications - Build shared platform foundations for provisioning, upgrades, backups, observability, and automation across all DBaaS products - Partner with Support and the field on customer escalations and turn what we learn into product improvements - Own headcount, budget, and cloud spend, and report progress clearly to the executive team Requirements - 15+ years in software engineering, including several years leading managers and organizations of 50+ engineers across multiple locations - Strong track record of building and operating a mission-critical cloud service or SaaS platform, ideally for data infrastructure - Experience owning or partnering closely with Security and SRE, including incident management, SLOs, and compliance frameworks such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001 - Technical depth in distributed systems and fault-tolerant designs, with the judgment to guide architecture and cost trade-offs - A record of hiring strong leaders and building engaged, high-performing teams - Clear, direct communication with engineers, executives, and customers - Experience with: - Public cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, and/or Azure) - Containerization tooling, theory and design (Docker, Kubernetes) - Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred) - Monitoring and observability systems (Prometheus preferred) - CI/CD systems (GitHub Actions preferred) - Relational database systems (PostgreSQL preferred) - Willingness and ability to learn new technologies and concepts Nice to have - Experience with databases or other stateful distributed systems - Experience building a BYOC or hybrid deployment model, or a self-managed product alongside a managed service - Experience at an open-source company and enthusiasm for working with the community We work in a hybrid model, with the team together in our Sunnyvale office 2–3 days per week.
