ABOUT VEG
In 2014, VEG was born with a mission to help people and their pets when they need it most by challenging norms and fixing the ER experience. Since then, we’ve expanded rapidly, with hospitals nationwide open 24/7/365, and created an ER experience that focuses on what our pets and pet parents really need. We’ve done the same for our people (VEGgies), finding a way to say YES so they are empowered to achieve great things, grow in unexpected ways, and find a place where they truly belong.
We’re rethinking emergency care from every angle—from how we run our hospitals to how we support the people working inside them. That’s where our headquarters team comes in. Whether building technology to make our hospitals more efficient, recruiting and growing incredible VEGgies, or bringing our brand to life through marketing, our VQ (VEG Headquarters) team makes it all possible—ensuring our hospitals and people have everything they need to help pets and their families.
VEG is a 2025 and 2026 certified Great Place to Work®.
THE JOB
Position Summary
The Senior Tax Accountant – Indirect Tax will support VEG’s state and local tax function with a primary focus on sales and use tax, personal property tax, and other indirect tax matters. This role will take meaningful ownership of recurring compliance, reconciliations, taxability analysis, notices, audits, registrations, account maintenance, and process improvement across a growing multistate organization.
This position is ideal for a tax professional with 3–4 years of experience who has developed a strong foundation in indirect tax within a large public accounting firm or similarly complex corporate environment. The role requires strong technical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to independently manage recurring responsibilities while partnering with internal teams, taxing authorities, and external service providers.
The Senior Tax Accountant will also play an important role in helping VEG continue to build scalable indirect tax processes as the company expands into additional jurisdictions. Experience with Avalara or other tax technology platforms is a plus.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and support multistate sales and use tax compliance, including review of monthly filings, reconciliations, taxability issues, exemption activity, account maintenance, and resolution of filing discrepancies.
- Support and increasingly own personal property tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions, including data gathering, return preparation and review, assessment review, payment tracking, jurisdiction-specific requirements, and maintenance of filing calendars and records.
- Research and analyze state and local tax issues, including sales and use tax, personal property tax, business licenses, gross receipts taxes, and other indirect or locally administered taxes.
- Review and resolve notices, assessments, audits, and information requests from state and local taxing authorities, including researching issues, preparing supporting documentation, coordinating responses, and tracking matters through resolution.
- Manage state and local tax registrations, account maintenance, portal access, filing requirements, and ongoing compliance administration across jurisdictions.
- Perform reconciliations of tax filings, payments, general ledger accounts, transaction data, and supporting workpapers to identify discrepancies and ensure tax obligations are accurately recorded and paid.
- Support indirect tax technology and process administration, including tax code mapping, rate and taxability reviews, exemption certificate processes, transaction-level analysis, and Avalara-related workflows.
- Work cross-functionally with Accounting, Finance, Accounts Payable, Real Estate, Operations, Legal, and other teams to gather information, resolve tax issues, and improve tax-related processes.
- Coordinate with external advisors and third-party tax service providers on compliance, audits, research, and special projects.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, strengthen controls, standardize processes, and increase the use of automation and AI within the indirect tax function.
- Maintain well-organized tax calendars, trackers, procedures, supporting documentation, and audit-ready records.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Tax, Finance, or a related field.
- 3–4 years of relevant state and local tax experience, with meaningful hands-on exposure to sales and use tax and other indirect taxes.
- Public accounting experience with a large national or regional accounting firm, or comparable experience working in a complex multistate corporate tax environment.
- Strong understanding of multistate sales and use tax concepts, including taxability, exemptions, sourcing, registrations, filings, notices, and reconciliations.
- Experience with personal property tax compliance, assessments, or related jurisdictional requirements.
- Experience researching and resolving state and local tax issues and communicating with taxing authorities.
- Strong Excel skills and comfort working with large datasets, transaction-level detail, reconciliations, and compliance trackers.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with a high level of attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and tax jurisdictions while independently driving work to completion.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with internal teams, external advisors, and taxing authorities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Avalara or another sales tax automation and compliance platform.
- Experience working in a Big Four, large national, or large regional public accounting firm with exposure to complex multistate clients.
- Experience with personal property tax software, exemption certificate management, or other indirect tax technology.
- CPA or progress toward CPA is a plus.
