Mechanical Engineering
COMPANY OVERVIEW
TransGrid Energy is a renewable energy company focused on investing, developing, owning and operating utility-scale battery energy storage systems and PV projects. TransGrid has a robust pipeline of projects under construction and in late-stage development, and the Company is actively expanding its energy asset portfolio across the United States.
As an affiliate company of Hanwha Group, a FORTUNE Global 500 company driven by a firm commitment to advancing the clean energy future, TransGrid Energy is striving to shape the renewable energy landscape by providing sustainable and reliable power solutions tailored to meet the energy needs of today and tomorrow.
POSITION OVERVIEW
As Senior Manager, Mechanical Engineer at TransGrid Energy, you will own the cooling and mechanical design for data center projects, ensuring high-density IT loads remain thermally safe, reliable, and energy efficient across both traditional air cooling and emerging liquid-cooling technologies.
Your primary responsibility is to develop and oversee mechanical systems from concept and plant sizing through detailed design, equipment selection, construction, and commissioning. You will design infrastructure capable of supporting increasingly dense computing environments while balancing thermal performance, reliability, constructability, cost, and energy and water efficiency.
This is a highly cross-functional role within the Engineering & Preconstruction organization. You will work closely with Electrical, Controls, Power Systems, Construction, Preconstruction, and Solutions Engineering to ensure mechanical systems are properly integrated with the broader data center infrastructure.
The ideal candidate brings strong data center cooling experience, including chilled-water plants and controls, along with a growing understanding of high-density liquid cooling. This individual should be comfortable owning technical decisions, reviewing designs, specifying equipment, and supporting projects through construction and commissioning.
RESPONSIBILITIES
· Own the mechanical and cooling design for data center projects, from concept and basis of design through construction, commissioning, and turnover.
· Design and evaluate chilled-water, air-cooled, and liquid-cooling systems, including CRAH/CRAC units, cooling distribution units (CDUs), direct-to-chip cooling, immersion cooling, and associated infrastructure.
· Lead mechanical plant sizing, capacity planning, redundancy strategies, and system architecture to support high-density IT loads and required availability.
· Develop and review piping, pumping, heat rejection, and mechanical distribution systems, ensuring designs are reliable, efficient, and constructible.
· Optimize mechanical systems for PUE and WUE performance, balancing thermal requirements, energy consumption, water usage, capital cost, and operational efficiency.
· Develop and review controls sequences and mechanical controls integration, coordinating with Controls and Electrical teams to ensure effective building-management-system (BMS) operation.
· Specify and evaluate major mechanical equipment and support procurement of long-lead equipment, including technical reviews, vendor coordination, and equipment selection.
· Coordinate mechanical interfaces with Electrical, Controls, Construction, Preconstruction, and other engineering disciplines, identifying and resolving design conflicts and constructability issues.
· Support construction, commissioning, and startup activities by reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, resolving field issues, and verifying thermal performance and mechanical system operation.
· Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Approximately 8+ years of experience designing mechanical and cooling systems for data centers, mission-critical facilities, or similarly complex industrial environments.
· Demonstrated experience with data center cooling systems, including chilled-water plants, air cooling, mechanical distribution, and controls.
· Strong understanding of high-density IT cooling requirements and the relationship between rack density, thermal loads, cooling capacity, redundancy, and facility efficiency.
· Experience with plant sizing, redundancy, PUE, WUE, piping and pumping design, and mechanical controls sequences.
· Working knowledge of ASHRAE TC 9.9 and data center thermal-management practices.
· Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or a related engineering discipline.
· Professional Engineer (PE) license required or strongly preferred.
· Experience specifying, evaluating, and supporting procurement of major mechanical equipment and long-lead items.
· Ability to work effectively with Electrical, Controls, Construction, Preconstruction, vendors, and other engineering teams.
· Experience supporting mechanical commissioning, startup, and performance verification.
· Experience with direct-to-chip or immersion cooling is highly desirable.
· Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound engineering decisions in complex and fast-moving project environments.
· Travel may be required depending on business and project needs.
WORK AUTHORIZATION
The ideal candidate for this role will have authorization to work in the US prior to joining TransGrid Energy LLC. This role will not sponsor or offer assistance with the sponsorship for work authorization in the United States.
