About the role
Machine LearningAccountingTax Accounting
Voleon is a technology company that applies state-of-the-art AI and machine learning techniques to real-world problems in finance. For nearly two decades, we have led our industry and worked at the frontier of applying AI/ML to investment management. We have become a multibillion-dollar asset manager, and we have ambitious goals for the future.
Your colleagues will include internationally recognized experts in machine learning research as well as highly experienced finance and technology professionals. You will be working with strategies that are at the forefront of machine learning and statistical trading. The strategies have been carefully designed to generate non-correlated returns. Our firm and its strategies are the product of many years of meticulous research and craftsmanship, and you will lead the way in bringing them to investors.
As Senior Tax Accountant, you will report directly to Voleon's Tax Manager and support the management company tax function across a complex, multi-entity structure. This role is a means to make a difference: you will help manage tax compliance, coordinate with external advisors, support tax planning, and build scalable tax processes as the function continues to evolve. You will collaborate closely with colleagues across Finance, Legal, Accounting, Operations, and senior leadership while developing deep familiarity with Voleon's domestic and international entities, including partnerships, corporations, and foreign entities. The role offers broad exposure to compliance, planning, entity structuring, advisor management, and strategic tax projects within a growing and dynamic business.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as the primary day-to-day point of contact for external tax advisors across federal, state, local, and international compliance matters, compiling workpaper packages, managing open-item lists, and gathering supporting information from Accounting, Legal, Operations, and HR
- Perform first-pass review of returns, K-1s, workpapers, and supporting schedules prepared by external advisors, summarizing findings for Tax Manager review
- Prepare quarterly federal and state estimated tax calculations for entities, partners, and trusts; maintain payment trackers; reconcile payments against liabilities; and coordinate processing and approvals with Finance and Treasury
- Maintain the tax compliance calendar and proactively manage filing deadlines across all entities, including business licenses, annual filings, registrations, and tax-authority notice management
- Prepare partner-facing tax reporting, estimate summaries, and reconciliations, and support partner-level compliance coordination with partners and their personal tax advisors
- Support tax research, modeling, and planning, including entity classification, SALT/nexus, state partnership rules, special allocations, and strategic projects such as restructuring, international initiatives, and new business activities
- Improve tax processes through automation, documentation, and internal knowledge resources that drive consistency and reduce dependency on external advisors
REQUIREMENTS
- 3–5 years of tax experience, preferably at a Big 4 or national accounting firm; CPA preferred
- Strong working knowledge of federal and state income tax compliance for partnerships (Form 1065), with corporate (Forms 1120) preferred; individual (Form 1040) and trust (Form 1041) experience is a plus
- Strong understanding of partnership taxation and related reporting
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple concurrent deadlines
- Prior hedge fund, asset management, financial services, or alternative investment experience preferred but not required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field
