About DVS The mission of the Department of Veterans’ Services is to connect, mobilize, and empower New York City’s Veteran Community in order to foster purpose-driven lives for New York City Service Members – past and present – in addition to their caregivers, survivors, and families. DVS fulfills this mission by providing New York City’s approximately 200,000 Veterans with essential services and programs focused on pivotal areas such as economic empowerment, housing security, benefits, health and wellness, and culture. About the Role Deputy Director of External Affairs The Deputy Director of External Affairs supports the agency’s legislative, intergovernmental, and external affairs operations through strategic coordination, executive support, stakeholder engagement, and logistical management. The position plays a critical operational and strategic support role in legislative coordination, executive communications, stakeholder engagement, external affairs operations, project management, event coordination, and interagency collaboration. The responsibilities of the Deputy Director of External Affairs will include, but are not limited to: - Coordinate logistics and operational planning for meetings, stakeholder engagements, ceremonies, conferences, resource fairs, public events, and agency outreach activities - Serve as a liaison between agency staff and external stakeholders, including community organizations, veteran-serving organizations, elected officials, nonprofit partners, and other government entities - Support scheduling coordination and stakeholder communications related to external engagements and agency initiatives - Assist with the coordination of external affairs operations, including event preparation, briefing logistics, guest management, follow-up actions, and operational execution - Track external engagement requests, partnership activities, outreach initiatives, and stakeholder follow-up actions to ensure timely coordination and execution - Support agency leadership during external engagements, site visits, ceremonies, panels, and public-facing events - Prepare briefing materials, event documents, stakeholder lists, background information, and operational summaries for agency leadership - Coordinate with internal divisions and external partners to ensure alignment on operational needs, event execution, and stakeholder engagement priorities - Assist in maintaining organized records, tracking systems, calendars, and operational documents related to external affairs activities - Support partnership engagement efforts with veteran-serving organizations, community stakeholders, philanthropic partners, and government entities - Assist with the coordination of special projects and agency initiatives requiring cross functional collaboration and external stakeholder coordination - Represent the agency at meetings, outreach events, and community engagements as assigned - Support agency operational needs related to outreach, engagement activities, and external affairs coordination - Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned in support of agency leadership and operational priorities - Support the coordination of legislative and intergovernmental affairs activities involving City, State, and Federal elected officials, government stakeholders, and veteran-serving organizations COMMUNITY COORDINATOR - 56058 1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or 2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or 3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
