About the role
Executive Producer, New Daily Show
KNKX | Full-time onsite in Tacoma, Washington
Salary Range: $90,000 - $110,000 annually, depending on experience
About the Opportunity
Pacific Public Media/KNKX has a strong history of creating memorable, award-winning content. From long-form documentaries to reporting, the station has always valued creativity and digging deep into the topics that matter to Western Washington.
Now, KNKX is launching something new: a daily, one-hour news, interview and storytelling program that will serve listeners from Bellingham to Castlerock, and Seattle to Aberdeen. The show will cover the news of the day while saving space for arts, culture, and the stories that surprise and inspire.
We’re hiring for an Executive Producer onsite in Tacoma, WA. This is a rare opportunity to build a show from the ground up at a station that is investing and growing. In a media landscape where newsrooms are contracting, KNKX is creating something, and the right person gets to shape what it becomes.
Why This Role Stands Out
- You get to create a show from scratch and define its voice, identity, and editorial direction.
- You will build your own team: partner in hiring the Host, Co-Host, Producers, and Digital Producer who will bring the show to life.
- Fill a real need: this show is part of KNKX's commitment to serving the community.
The Role
As Executive Producer, you will be the creative and operational leader behind this new program. Working in close partnership with the News Director, you will shape the daily editorial vision and sound of the show, lead a 6-person production team, and help set the standard for what local public media can be.
This is not a role where you step into an existing show with established workflows. The first months will be about building: developing the show's identity, hiring the team, integrating with the newsroom, and getting a new program on the air. Once the show launches, you will be responsible for the consistency, quality, and growth of the product across broadcast, podcast, digital, and social platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Help build the show from the ground up in partnership with KNKX senior leadership, including hiring the production team.
- Shape the daily editorial direction and sound of the program, balancing news of the day with arts, culture, and storytelling.
- Manage, develop, and lead a 5-person production team (Host, Co-Host, 2 Producers, Digital Producer) to deliver compelling daily content.
- Pitch and produce engaging segments alongside the team, leading by example on deadline.
- Work closely with the KNKX newsroom to share content, develop story leads, and coordinate regional coverage.
- Champion a multi-platform approach, ensuring the show reaches audiences as a broadcast, podcast, in digital stories, on social media, and through a weekly newsletter.
- Handle administrative responsibilities including scheduling, time management, and planning for coverage across the team.
What We're Looking For
Must-Haves
- 5+ years of experience managing people and leading a collaborative production team. This is the top priority. You have inspired and guided different personalities, navigated tough conversations, and managed, supported, and held your team accountable.
- 7+ years of deep experience with daily production and deadlines. You know what it takes to put out a show every day, whether that has been in radio, television, or podcasting.
- On-air experience. With a 6-person team, coverage gaps happen. We need you to be comfortable stepping in front of the microphone when the situation calls for it.
- A demonstrated understanding of public media values and sound. You do not have to come from public radio, but you need to get what makes it different.
- Bachelor's degree preferred
- This position is based in KNKX’s Tacoma, WA studios 5 days a week
Sets You Apart
- Experience building or creating a show or program from scratch. If you have launched something new and it stuck, that puts you in the top tier for this role.
- Connections to Western Washington's news, civic, cultural, and political landscape. Local knowledge is not required, but it strengthens your candidacy.
- A flexible, audience-first mindset. You think about what listeners want and need.
