About Metron
Metron is an employee-owned company dedicated to delivering innovative solutions for the most challenging national security problems. For over 40 years, our principled approach to problem-solving has yielded creative solutions at the intersection of advanced mathematics, computer science, physics, and engineering. Our people are leaders in their technical fields and are passionate about solving challenging problems. We look for individuals who share this same passion and can apply their experience in real-world settings.
Metron’s Portland office is seeking a mid-level Software Engineer to help design, develop, maintain, and enhance software for technical analysis and decision-support applications.
We are looking for an engineer who can take ownership of a loosely defined capability and turn it into a working application. Our projects do not always begin with complete requirements or a detailed specification. Successful engineers at Metron are comfortable asking the right questions, working directly with researchers, engineers, users, and customers, and iterating toward practical solutions.
This role is primarily focused on implementing core application logic, with occasional user interface development.

- Build reliable, maintainable applications, services, APIs, and supporting software infrastructure.
- Contribute to intuitive GUI/frontend applications and visualizations that make complex technical information understandable and useful.
- Collaborate directly with research scientists, engineers, project managers, operators, and customers to understand technical and operational needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, applied mathematics, engineering, or a related technical field
- At least 3 years of professional software development experience building applications or production software systems
- Strong foundation in object-oriented design and software development, with experience in Java, C++, or C#
- Experience developing applications, services, or APIs, along with experience contributing to GUI/frontend application development
- Strong engineering fundamentals, sound technical judgment, and the ability to collaborate effectively with researchers, engineers, and end users
- U.S. CITIZENSHIP REQUIRED; successful candidates will be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information
Desired Qualifications
- Active SECRET security clearance
- Experience writing high-performance, multi-threaded (parallel/concurrent) software
- Experience developing high-quality software in an environment where readability, maintainability, testing, and disciplined engineering practices are valued
- Experience in defense, national security, or other mission-driven environments
- Experience with TypeScript and React or other modern frontend development frameworks
- Experience using Python, particularly for scientific computing, data processing, modeling and simulation, or transitioning research software into operational applications.
- Experience with data-intensive or distributed systems, including databases, messaging systems, and asynchronous processing
