About the role

CADManufacturingRoboticsSolidWorksMechanical Engineering
COMPANY OVERVIEW Each year, 2.5 trillion hours are spent on household chores. At Matic, we’re on a mission to recapture that lost time, and we’re doing it by revolutionizing home robotics. Our first product, also called Matic, is a Wall-E-esque floor cleaning robot. We've built what amounts to "full self-driving in the home” with real-time 3D mapping, adaptive path-tracking, and a precise semantic understanding of the home. Our breakthroughs in spatial AI allow Matic to work reliably in real homes, using only RGB cameras and neural networks running on-device. PRIVACY FIRST What happens in the home, stays in the home. Our robots are private by design, with all data processing performed by the robot itself, not in the cloud. OUR APPROACH Before the iPhone, consumers adopted several distinct devices; cell phones, PDAs, and portable music players each served a particular need. We believe in a similar progression for home robotics, starting with single-purpose robots and building iteratively toward more complex capabilities over time. OUR CULTURE Matic is a tight-knit and collaborative team, singularly focused on building products our customers will cherish. We're ultra-hardworking people committed to solving tough problems that save precious time and energy. ABOUT THE ROLE As a Manufacturing Design Engineering Intern, you will work at the intersection of R&D and production, helping translate product designs into robust, scalable manufacturing solutions. With guidance from experienced engineers, you will use CAD tools to design fixtures, tooling, and equipment, develop assembly processes, and improve workflows for high-volume production. If you’re passionate about great design, hands-on problem-solving, and getting the details right, we’d love to talk about how you can help us build robots for the home. WHAT YOU'LL DO - Tooling & Equipment Design: Design and build production fixtures, QC equipment, and specialized tooling to support assembly and testing on the manufacturing line. - Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with product design, quality, and manufacturing teams to troubleshoot production issues and support new product launches. - Work with vendors, suppliers, and contract manufacturers alongside the engineering team. - Root Cause Analysis: Help analyze production issues and yield data, investigate failures, and develop and validate corrective actions. - Prototype, fabricate, and iterate rapidly to turn concepts into reliable manufacturing solutions. - Perform component-level testing for performance, durability, reliability, and variability. - Technical Documentation: Create and maintain CAD models, engineering drawings, specifications, and assembly and test instructions. - Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Help refine product designs for efficient, cost-effective, and scalable manufacturing. WHAT WE LOOK FOR - Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field, or demonstrating equivalent hands-on experience. - Experience designing and building mechanical parts, fixtures, or assemblies through project teams, research, internships, or personal projects. - Proficiency in SolidWorks and experience creating engineering drawings. - Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, injection molding, casting, welding, or mechanical assembly. - An understanding of mechanical fundamentals, tolerances, and how parts fit and function together. - A hands-on approach to prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting. - An interest in using data to understand failures and improve manufacturing processes. - Clear communication, accountability, and pride in delivering high-quality work. - Comfort working in a fast-paced startup environment and a willingness to take ownership of problems while asking for help when needed. Experience with PDM/PLM systems, engineering change management, sensors, motors, or fluid systems is a plus, but not required. WE'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU IF... - You’re genuinely motivated to help teammates succeed. - You enjoy learning beyond your immediate area of expertise. - You love diagnosing and solving complex technical problems. - You’re excited to do meaningful, hands-on work.
