Role Overview:
The VP, Client Delivery is a senior, hands-on leader accountable for the quality, consistency, and profitability of the finance and accounting work Attivo provides to its portfolio of VC-backed, high-growth clients. This role pairs leadership of our client service teams with VP Finance-level technical expertise. They will oversee all client engagements so work is on time, in scope, and meets our quality standards; serve as the senior escalation point for client executives; act as the firm's senior technical finance resource; and lead and develop the team, including ownership of all Learning & Development. Working as a peer to our partners and internal CFO, you will take day-to-day oversight, escalations, and staffing decisions off their plates so they can focus on growing the firm. For the right person, this role offers a path to the leadership team.
Responsibilities:
Client Delivery & Quality Oversight (~30%)
- Oversee end-to-end delivery across all Attivo client accounts so work is on time, in scope, and meets quality standards.
- Serve as the final reviewer and approver of key client deliverables, including close packages, consolidated financial statements, forecasts, and board and investor reporting, before they reach the client.
- Track delivery KPIs such as quality, timeliness, utilization, and client health, and report on them regularly to the Partner.
- Identify delivery risks early and address them proactively with clear mitigation plans.
Client Relationships & Escalations (~25%)
- Serve as the senior escalation point for delivery issues, resolving timeliness, quality, and responsiveness concerns directly with client executives.
- Lead difficult conversations about scope, budget, and quality with founders, CEOs, and CFOs in a professional and authoritative way, and hold the line on scope creep and unreasonable asks.
- Partner with Attivo CFOs and partners on client engagements, and support them on complex and at-risk accounts, including clients at risk of termination.
- Maintain a small portfolio of client engagements to stay close to the work, the team, and the client experience.
Technical Finance Leadership (~20%)
- Serve as the senior technical resource for the team, CFOs, and partners on month-end and year-end close, multi-entity consolidations, revenue recognition (ASC 606), stock comp (ASC 718), leases (ASC 842), audits, tax and compliance, cash forecasting, and SaaS metrics.
- Build and review financial models, cash and runway forecasts, KPI dashboards, and other analysis that help clients make informed decisions.
- Make day-to-day technical accounting judgments on revenue recognition, accruals, consolidations, and reconciliations within GAAP and firm standards.
- Lead financial audits and oversee compliance filings, including 1099s, 3921s, Delaware franchise tax, state filings, and sales tax.
Team Management, Development & Process Improvement (~15%)
- Manage the delivery team, including the Client Onboarding Lead and the Resource Manager.
- Work alongside the Resource Manager assisting in staffing and capacity decisions, assigning team members to clients, balancing workloads, and rebalancing as client needs change.
- Coach and develop team members, hold regular one-on-ones, run performance conversations, and take part in hiring.
- Turn ad hoc work into standard, repeatable delivery processes, such as close checklists, review workflows, and onboarding playbooks.
- Work with the team on resourcing models, delivery metrics, and service improvements.
Learning & Development (~10%)
- Collaborate on Learning & Development initiatives, including content development, scheduling, and execution.
- Assist in building a consistent, high-impact program that strengthens both technical accounting skills and client-facing skills.
- Occasionally lead or present at internal training sessions, lunch-and-learns, and team meetings.
Additional Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the partners and business development team to scope new work, join pitches when technical finance expertise helps, and ensure smooth transitions from sales to delivery.
- Interview and assess candidates for delivery and accounting roles, including technical interviews.
- Identify emerging client needs and trends, and contribute ideas for new or improved service offerings.
- Provide input on delivery capacity, headcount needs, and resourcing forecasts during business planning.
- Participate in firm initiatives such as rolling out new tools, adopting AI in delivery work, and documenting processes.
- Act as a visible leader and culture carrier for a remote team, and model Attivo's values.
- Contribute to content, webinars, or industry events that build Attivo's brand with startup and VC audiences.
Requirements:
- Polished executive presence, with the ability to communicate clearly and with authority to founders, CEOs, CFOs, and boards
- Confident pushing back on scope, quality, and expectations using data, numbers, and sound judgment rather than opinion
- Direct but diplomatic: delivers hard messages honestly while keeping relationships intact
- Skilled at managing up and influencing experienced, strong-willed senior leaders
- Steady and composed under pressure with demanding clients and stakeholders, with a low ego and openness to feedback
- Strong sense of ownership: resolves issues rather than escalating them, and brings recommendations rather than questions
- Disciplined about follow-through and documentation, including written recaps and tracked commitments
- Highly organized, with the ability to manage many clients, deadlines, and priorities without dropping details
- Hands-on leader who gets into the details, reviews the work, and steps in on technical issues
- Builds structure from ambiguity and thrives in fast-paced, high-growth environments
- Commercial thinker who weighs scope, margin, and client value alongside the technical work
- Enjoys coaching and developing people, and is a steadying presence for the team
- High integrity and discretion with confidential client and employee information
- Curious and adaptable, quick to learn new client systems, industries, and tools, including AI
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field; CPA (active or inactive) and/or MBA or master's in Accounting/Finance strongly preferred
- Hands-on ownership of finance at the VP Finance or Controller level in early-stage, VC-backed companies, including end-to-end month-end close, multi-entity consolidations, audits, and financial statements (not only oversight of others doing the work)
- Experience leading client delivery for a portfolio of clients at a professional services or consulting firm (ideally 200 to 1,000 people), including serving as the senior escalation point for C-suite clients
- 5+ years managing mid-to-large teams, ideally leading managers as well as individual contributors (typically 5 to 10 direct reports and 20 to 50+ indirect reports), including fully remote teams
- Full people-leadership responsibility, including hiring, performance management, final review of client deliverables, training and mentoring, and resourcing
- Track record delivering strategic finance for VC-backed companies, including forecasting, cash and runway models, SaaS metrics, and board or investor reporting
- Strong US GAAP knowledge, including ASC 606, ASC 718, and ASC 842, and deep SaaS metrics knowledge
- Understanding of engagement economics, including scoping, pricing, margin, utilization, and resourcing across a multi-client portfolio
- NetSuite (including multi-entity, consolidations, and multi-currency) and QuickBooks Online; advanced Excel/Google Sheets modeling; experience using AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot) in finance workflows
Nice to Have:
- Experience at an outsourced accounting, fractional CFO, or finance consulting firm; Big 4 or national firm background; or in-house VP Finance/Controller experience at a VC-backed company
- Industry experience in SaaS and technology, fintech, life sciences/biotech, marketplaces/e-commerce, or hardware/deep tech
- Familiarity with Rillet, Campfire, Puzzle, Bill.com, Ramp, Brex, Rippling, Gusto, Justworks, Double, Stripe, Chargebee, Maxio, HubSpot, FP&A/BI tools, Carta, Avalara, or Anrok
- Experience building or scaling service offerings, or turning custom work into packaged, repeatable products
- Fundraising execution experience, including data rooms, diligence, and investor Q&A
- Workers' Comp and EDD audit experience, and hands-on HR, benefits, and payroll operations
- Experience building a learning and development program, and using AI to automate close, reporting, or analysis
- CMA, CFA, NetSuite certification, or PMP
What Success Looks Like:
- First 30 days: Build relationships with the partners, internal CFO, delivery team, and key clients; review every active account; agree on decision rights with the Partner; and begin personally reviewing key deliverables and handling routine escalations.
- By 60 days: Serve as the main escalation point for delivery, with partners and the CFO no longer pulled into routine scope, staffing, or quality questions; launch a delivery KPI dashboard; start at least one process improvement; and deliver or schedule the first Learning & Development session.
Location:
- Remote – NYC & San Francisco Bay Area, preferred
- Ability to travel at least two times a year for All-Staff Retreats & Regional Meetups, plus client travel as needed (e.g., for escalations)
