Equipment Control Manager

Position Overview
The Equipment Control Manager is responsible for managing and controlling the company’s equipment fleet, including containers, chassis, and other operational assets. This role uses Six Sigma principles and standard operating procedures to improve equipment utilization, reduce losses, increase inventory accuracy, and ensure equipment is available where and when customers need it. They also monitor equipment movements, analyzes inventory levels, resolves equipment issues, and works with multiple departments to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and support reliable service.
Responsibilities:
Equipment Inventory and Asset Control
- Maintain accurate records of all company-owned and leased equipment.
- Monitor equipment inventory levels at terminals, yards, and out-port locations.
- Track equipment movements and ensure equipment is used efficiently.
- Forecast equipment needs and coordinate repositioning to meet operational demands.
- Identify and correct inventory discrepancies quickly.
- Monitor equipment utilization and recommend actions to improve performance.
Equipment Flow and Compliance
- Track and report container, chassis, and equipment movements through company systems.
- Ensure all equipment transactions are recorded accurately and on time.
- Monitor on-hire, off-hire, leasing, and container sale activities.
- Verify that equipment is released and returned according to company procedures and lease agreements.
- Investigate and resolve cases involving incorrect releases, unauthorized use, or subleased equipment.
- Manage cases involving lost, stolen, or missing equipment and coordinate recovery efforts.
Demurrage and Billing Management
- Calculate import demurrage charges accurately and on time.
- Monitor last free-day dates and billing requirements.
- Review invoices and support documentation for accuracy.
- Assist with resolving customer disputes related to demurrage and equipment charges.
- Work with Finance to ensure proper billing and collection processes.
Operations and Terminal Support
- Serve as the primary escalation point for equipment-related issues at terminals, yards, and out-port locations.
- Oversee headquarters terminal and yard gate activities related to equipment control.
- Coordinate with Operations, Commercial, Logistics, and Finance teams to ensure equipment availability and efficient asset utilization.
- Support vessel schedules and cargo operations by ensuring equipment is positioned where needed.
Data Accuracy and Process Improvement
- Maintain accurate equipment data, moves, and event records within company systems.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to equipment utilization, inventory accuracy, turnaround time, and equipment availability.
- Identify process gaps, root causes of errors, and opportunities for improvement.
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions.
- Implement process improvements that reduce errors, improve efficiency, and strengthen equipment control.
- Support Six Sigma and continuous improvement initiatives.
Leadership and Team Development
- Supervise the daily activities of the Equipment Control team.
- Train employees on company procedures, systems, and best practices.
- Assign work and monitor performance to ensure accuracy and timely completion.
- Coach, mentor, and develop team members to improve skills and performance.
- Establish goals, track results, and support employee development.
- Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Requirements:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Experience in equipment control, logistics, transportation, shipping, or terminal operations preferred.
- Experience supervising employees and managing operational processes preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of container, chassis, and equipment management processes.
- Ability to analyze data and identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
