Position Summary The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator will develop, implement, and manage Voces de la Frontera's volunteer engagement infrastructure. Reporting to the Director of Development, this position will serve as the central point of coordination for recruiting, onboarding, training, placing, supporting, and retaining volunteers across the organization. The coordinator will work collaboratively with staff to create meaningful volunteer roles and establish systems that transform community interest into sustained action, long-term leadership, and increased organizational capacity. Department: Development Reports to: Director of Development Location: Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with travel throughout Wisconsin as needed Schedule: 20 hours per week; occasional evenings and weekends Position Term: limited-term position; continuation is contingent upon funding and organizational need Essential Duties This list is not exhaustive and may evolve in response to organizational needs. Volunteer Engagement Strategy and Program Development - Develop and implement a comprehensive volunteer engagement program aligned with Voces' mission, campaigns, and organizational priorities. - Create and maintain consistent systems, procedures, and tools for volunteer recruitment, intake, onboarding, placement, communication, recognition, retention, and offboarding. - Assess existing volunteer practices and recommend improvements that strengthen coordination, accessibility, responsiveness, and the volunteer experience. Recruitment, Onboarding, and Placement - Recruit volunteers through community outreach, organizational partnerships, public events, digital communications, and supporter networks. - Respond promptly to volunteer inquiries and conduct intake conversations to understand volunteers' skills, interests, language abilities, availability, and goals. - Coordinate volunteer orientations, onboarding, background checks or other screening when appropriate, and required training. - Match volunteers with meaningful opportunities across organizing campaigns, community defense, legal support, membership, fundraising, communications, administrative projects, phone banks, call centers, and special events. Leadership Development and Retention - Build ongoing relationships with volunteers through regular communication, follow-up, recognition, and opportunities for deeper engagement. - Create pathways for volunteers to take on increasing responsibility and develop into volunteer leaders, members, community fundraisers, and long-term organizational supporters. - Identify barriers to volunteer participation and work with staff to make opportunities welcoming, accessible, and inclusive. Cross-Department Collaboration - Meet regularly with staff across departments to identify volunteer needs, develop appropriate roles, clarify supervision expectations, and coordinate placements. - Support large-scale and time-sensitive volunteer mobilizations, including rapid response activities, marches, elections, legal clinics, community events, and fundraising initiatives. - Collaborate with the Development Department to strengthen relationships among volunteers, members, donors, community fundraisers, and other supporters while respecting appropriate boundaries and confidentiality. Data, Evaluation, and Continuous Improvement - Maintain accurate and confidential volunteer records in organizational databases and tracking systems. - Track volunteer inquiries, placements, participation, retention, training, leadership development, and program outcomes. - Prepare regular reports and use data and volunteer feedback to evaluate impact, identify gaps, and continuously improve the volunteer engagement program. Qualifications The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to immigrant rights, social justice, and community organizing, with a passion for building power and creating positive change within the communities we serve. Education and Experience - At least 1-2 years of experience in volunteer coordination, community organizing, program coordination, leadership development, project management, or a related field. - Experience developing systems, improving workflows, or building a program or initiative is strongly preferred. - Experience in a nonprofit, advocacy, community-based, labor, immigrant-rights, or mission-driven organization is preferred. - Equivalent combinations of education, lived experience, community leadership, and professional experience will be considered. Skills and Competencies - Fluency in English and Spanish is required. - Strong relationship-building, interpersonal, written, verbal, and public presentation skills. - Excellent organizational and project-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and follow through in a fast-paced environment. - Ability to design, document, implement, and improve systems and workflows. - Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across departments and with people from diverse backgrounds. - Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, databases or CRMs, and standard office technology; experience with EveryAction, VAN, or volunteer-management platforms is a plus. - Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive information. - Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and willingness to travel within Wisconsin as needed. - Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends. Physical and Emotional Requirements - Regularly required to sit, use a computer, communicate by phone or video, and use hands for standard office tasks. - Frequently required to speak and listen; occasionally required to stand, walk, bend, and move materials. - Must be able to lift or carry up to 10 pounds occasionally. - Reliable transportation is required for commuting and approved work-related travel.
