It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.
The Graphics department at The New York Times is looking for a versatile, experienced visual journalist to report, design and create graphics and multimedia stories, with a primary focus on breaking news and fast-turn news response.
You will execute visual coverage on major breaking stories, producing maps, charts, diagrams and interactive graphics on deadline. Your work may also include statistical visualizations, video, photography and animation. Applications should include links to a portfolio or work samples to demonstrate the creation of visual journalism. Please feel free to describe your role in specific projects in your cover letter.

- Share responsibility for regular weekend news graphics coverage, ensuring prompt, high-quality visual response to breaking news.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
- You will report to the news editor on the Graphics team.
Basic Qualifications:
- 5+ years of professional experience producing, reporting, or editing visual journalism or news graphics.
- Proven track record of identifying visual opportunities quickly and delivering effective graphics in a fast-paced breaking news environment.
- Expertise in visual software (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Figma) and front-end web development tools (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
- Demonstrated experience with data reporting, interface design, and information graphics design.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent news judgment, strong written and oral communication skills, and ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.
- Familiarity with interactive web frameworks (such as Svelte), web mapping/GIS tools, and tools like ai2html.
- Experience integrating multimedia elements such as video, photography, and animation into news coverage.
- Experience prioritizing, organizing, and managing multiple fast-moving visual projects under tight deadlines.
