About Collective: Collective is on a mission to redefine the way businesses-of-one work. Our technology and team of trusted advisors help members achieve financial independence by taking care of everything from business incorporation to accounting, bookkeeping, tax services, and access to a thriving community, all in one integrated platform. We believe in empowering self-employed people to enjoy the same tax savings that big companies get, so they can focus on their passion, not paperwork. Featured in Forbes, Business Insider, Yahoo, Bloomberg, Financial Times, TechCrunch, and more. We are backed by General Catalyst, Sound Ventures, QED Investors, Google’s Gradient Ventures, Expa, and other investors who have financed iconic companies like YouTube, Substack, Twitch, Box, Hims, Instacart, and Lyft. About the role: You will be Collective's product and regulatory lawyer. You'll sit with Product and Member Operations while decisions are being made, carry the regulatory position on what we build across tax, payroll and financial services, and set the standards the business works to. The work runs from early product design through member-facing terms, launch and ongoing compliance. This is a hands-on role for a lawyer who makes the call rather than describing the risk, supported by outside specialists you select. What you'll do: - Advise Product and Member Operations from concept through launch, and set the launch standard teams design to. - Carry the regulatory position on our roadmap — tax advice boundaries, money transmission, insurance licensing and partnership structures — and bring in specialist counsel where it adds depth. - Draft plain, concise member-facing terms, disclaimers and consent flows. - Build our compliance program: the requirements that apply to us, the monitoring that tracks them, and the policies that govern how we advise members, use their data and market to them. - Advise on privacy and data use, including IRC §7216 consent, AI disclosures, GLBA and CCPA/CPRA, in partnership with Information Security. - Chair the Risk Oversight Committee and report the risk register to leadership and the Board. What you'll bring: - JD and active California bar membership, or eligibility for registered in-house counsel status in California. - 10+ years of legal experience, including substantial in-house time advising on a regulated consumer or SMB product — fintech, payments, insurance, tax or lending. - Experience as an embedded legal partner to product teams from early design through launch, with the judgment to disagree with a senior leader and offer a path forward. - Working knowledge of consumer privacy law (GLBA, CCPA/CPRA) and how data moves through vendors and AI systems. What we offer: - Hybrid Work Model: Based in San Francisco with a balance of in-office and remote flexibility. - Fresh Lunch: Provided on in-office days. - Commuter Support: $150 monthly reimbursement for transit expenses. - Health & Wellness: $200 quarterly reimbursement to support your well-being. - Time Off: Flexible PTO plus 14 company holidays. - Comprehensive Coverage: 100% medical, dental, and vision for employees; 75% coverage for dependents. - Parental Leave: 16 weeks fully paid. - Retirement & Ownership: 401k plan plus an equity package. - Team Connection: Quarterly virtual events and an annual in-person summit.
