Job Description – Accounting Assistant Context Mallards Support Services Ltd (MSS) is a recently formed company at the heart of a group of philanthropically funded sustainability initiatives in the Isle of Man. Several legal entities are involved in addition to MSS: namely, The Shuttleworth Botanic Garden Foundation, Botanical Operations Ltd, Mallards Diggers Ltd, Mann, Milk and Honey Ltd and MMH Farming Ltd. South African British technology entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth lives on the Island and has been investing in these projects for over a decade. The coming year will see a significant increase in activity and, thus, in the number of people employed in the Isle of Man (expected to be over 40, but also to increase steadily). MSS provides a range of administrative and support services to all projects on the Island. In addition, support will be provided to Mark Shuttleworth as an individual, via the creation of a family office, and to other projects funded by him; particularly, in São Tomé and Príncipe in Africa. At the time of writing this job description in October 2026, an office for the company is being developed in Santon. MSS currently operates from a temporary base at Port Grenaugh. Role Summary We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Accounting Assistant to join our finance team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for assisting with daily accounting tasks, maintaining financial records and ensuring accuracy in financial transactions. This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in accounting and financial management. Key Responsibilities - Assist in preparing financial statements, reports, and bank reconciliations. - Maintain and update general ledger entries and journal entries. - Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions. - Reconcile bank statements and financial discrepancies. - Assist in budget preparation and financial forecasting. - Support tax filing preparation and compliance with financial regulations. - Help in month-end and year-end closing procedures. - Maintain accurate financial records and documentation. - Assist in audits and financial reviews as required. - Work collaboratively with senior accountants and finance team on financial projects. Skills and Qualifications - Educated to bachelor’s degree level. - At least two years of relevant accounting experience. - Basic knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP/IFRS). - Proficiency in QuickBooks, or other accounting software, and Microsoft Office Suite. - Strong attention to detail and analytical skills. - Good communication and organisational skills. - Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines. - Knowledge of tax regulations and compliance is a plus.
