Basic Function and Scope of Responsibilities:
Responsible for setting up and operating a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mechanics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
Essential Function/Responsibilities:
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and calipers.
- Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, or grinders.
- Set up, adjust, and operate basic machine tools and specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations such as roller burnishing, cold rolling, etc.
- Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment in order to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter.
- Plan machining by studying work orders, blueprints, materials, specifications, surface locations, and machining parameters; interpret geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
- Set up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, and collets.
- Programs mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points, setting tool registers, and offsets, and calculating requirements, including basic math.
- Maintains specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling, boring, and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; and adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
- Verifies settings by measuring positions while adhering to customer standards.
- Maintains continuity between shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and ongoing needs. Documents actions by completing production and quality logs.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Training, Skills, Knowledge, and/or Experience:
- Six months to 1-year related experience and/or training.
- Must be able to operate a forklift and overhead crane.
- Must possess basic computer skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
