PUBLIC PROTECTION & ADVOCACY BUREAU
CONSUMER PROTECTION DIVISION - GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION UNIT
(Boston or Regional Office)
Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell seeks an experienced and highly motivated attorney to join her Office’s Gun Violence Prevention Unit (GVPU) to serve as an Assistant Attorney General. This innovative Unit, which sits within the Consumer Protection Division, works to reduce gun violence in Massachusetts through enforcement, industry accountability, consumer protection, regulatory compliance, and collaboration with government, industry, and community stakeholders.
Primary Duties: The Assistant Attorney General will work closely with the GVPU Director to advance the Unit’s mission by leading complex investigations and litigation designed to hold individual and corporate participants accountable, protect consumers, and address practices that contribute to gun violence. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Screening and developing new matters aligned with GVPU enforcement priorities, including civil consumer protection investigations and enforcement matters.
- Leading complex investigations into individual, corporate, and industry conduct, including potentially unfair or deceptive practices, consumer harms, and regulatory noncompliance.
- Managing complex, large-scale investigations through strategic document and data analysis, witness interviews, expert consultation, and coordination with government partners.
- Analyzing industry structures, business models, marketing and sales practices, distribution systems, and compliance programs.
- Drafting and litigating enforcement matters in state and federal court, including pleadings, motions, discovery, evidentiary proceedings, and trial preparation.
- Negotiating and enforcing settlements and other resolutions, as appropriate.
- Coordinating with teams across the Attorney General’s Office and with other government and regulatory partners to advance GVPU enforcement efforts.
- Supporting multistate, multi-party, and industry-wide investigations or coordinated actions with other Attorneys General, as appropriate.
- Supporting legislative, regulatory, policy, and public education initiatives through legal research, analysis, drafting, and strategic engagement with stakeholders.
- Engaging with community stakeholders as needed, including through developing and implementing communications strategies.
Position Requirements:
- Must be a member of the Massachusetts bar or eligible for admission in short order.
- A minimum of five (5) years of full-time legal experience, including substantial experience with complex investigations and litigation experience, preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to investigate sophisticated business conduct, develop comprehensive factual records, and translate those investigations into litigation, negotiated resolutions, or other enforcement outcomes.
- Experience managing document- and data-intensive matters, including complex discovery, electronic records, expert issues, and multiple witnesses or parties, is strongly preferred.
- Civil enforcement experience is required; experience with criminal and/or regulatory enforcement is considered a plus.
- Experience with regulated industries, multistate Attorney General matters, or other large-scale actions is considered a plus.
- Prior firearms-related legal experience is not required, but candidates should demonstrate an interest in the Unit’s public safety mission and an ability to master new legal, factual, and regulatory subject matter.
- Outstanding research, writing, litigation, and advocacy skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds, including other attorneys and staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a connection to the people and communities we serve and an interest in supporting a respectful, diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment.
