Working Hours: Part or full time – Monday to Friday, 08:00–16:00 (approximately 37.5 hours per week for full-time)
Job Overview
We are currently seeking an experienced and dedicated Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) to join an acute healthcare setting in Sheffield on a locum basis. This is an excellent opportunity for a Band 6 or Band 7 therapist with strong acute experience to manage an independent caseload of adults presenting with acquired swallowing and communication difficulties.
The successful therapist will need to be dysphagia trained and confident working autonomously within an acute environment. You will be responsible for assessing, managing and providing specialist Speech and Language Therapy intervention to adults with a range of acquired communication and swallowing needs.
This role offers the opportunity to work as part of a multidisciplinary team while managing your own clinical caseload and delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Independently manage a caseload of adult patients within an acute hospital setting.
- Assess and manage adults presenting with acquired swallowing difficulties and dysphagia.
- Assess and provide intervention for adults with acquired communication difficulties.
- Develop and implement individualised treatment and management plans based on patients’ clinical needs.
- Provide specialist dysphagia assessment, advice and management in line with professional standards and local protocols.
- Work autonomously while recognising when further clinical input or escalation is required.
- Work collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to support effective patient care and discharge planning.
- Provide appropriate advice, education and support to patients, relatives, carers and other healthcare professionals.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical records and documentation.
- Participate in relevant multidisciplinary meetings, case discussions and clinical reviews.
- Manage clinical priorities effectively within a busy acute environment.
- Work in accordance with HCPC and Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) standards and guidelines.
Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this role, you must have:
- A recognised degree in Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent).
- HCPC registration and eligibility for membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
- Essential: Previous experience working as a Speech and Language Therapist within an acute hospital setting.
- Essential: Dysphagia training and clinical experience in the assessment and management of swallowing difficulties.
- Experience working with adults with acquired swallowing and communication difficulties.
- The ability to independently manage a clinical caseload.
- Confidence working autonomously within a multidisciplinary acute setting.
- Strong clinical assessment, treatment and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A proactive, professional and patient-centred approach to clinical practice.
