About the role
CADManufacturingSolidWorksMandarin
Our mission at Oura is to empower every person to own their inner potential. Our award-winning products help our global community gain a deeper knowledge of their readiness, activity, and sleep quality by using their Oura Ring and its connected app. We've helped millions of people understand and improve their health by providing daily insights and practical steps to inspire healthy lifestyles.
Empowering the world starts with living our values and empowering our team. As a quickly growing company focused on helping people live healthier and happier lives, we ensure that our team members have what they need to do their best work — both in and out of the office.
At ŌURA, making is a craft. Designing the tools, processes, and systems that bring our products to life is a craft of its own.
As a Senior Manufacturing Designer, Mechanics, you will turn industrial and product design CAD into the fixtures, jigs, and manufacturing stations that enable us to build the Oura Ring at scale. You will own fixture and station design from concept through validation and mass production, ensuring every part is consistently located, held, moved, and presented across all 10 ring sizes.
You will work at the intersection of product design and manufacturing, translating product surfaces and assembly models into robust manufacturing solutions. You will define part and fixture datums, lead fixture development with contract manufacturers and equipment vendors, perform tolerance analyses across part, fixture, and process variation, and create station and machine renderings that bring the future factory to life for Design, Engineering, vendors, and leadership.
This is a hybrid role requiring someone to work 2-3 days a week out of our San Francisco office.
What You Will Do:
- Analyze industrial design and product design CAD to develop jig and fixture concepts: define part datums versus fixture datums, locating and constraint schemes, no-contact and cosmetic zones, and a size-family strategy across 10 ring sizes, and deliver fixture and jig concepts before vendor DFM lock
- Drive renderings for machine and station concepts: line layout, operator ergonomics, part flow, guarding, size changeover, and semi automated versus fully automated variants, so industrial design sees how its part will be held and touched before the design locks, vendors quote one architecture, and leadership decides with a picture
- Maintain the fixture and station CAD library and the datum scheme documentation across programs so learnings carry from one architecture to the next
- Participate in DFM and DFA reviews with industrial design, product design, and contract manufacturers, bringing fixturing and handling feedback that is specific to a surface, a datum, or a tolerance
- Support station buy-off and process qualification jointly with Process Engineering, owning the fixture and station acceptance criteria
- Work with the design studio and prototype workshop during concept phases, and at the NPI site during build events
What you'll bring
- 5+ years in fixture, tooling, automation, or manufacturing design engineering for precision consumer hardware, wearables, medical devices, or optics
- BS or MS in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or Product Design Engineering, or an equivalent design or engineering background
- Has designed fixtures, jigs, carriers, and stations that shipped into a contract manufacturer and ran at mass production scale, including config or variant changeover
- Deep passion and CAD (SolidWorks or NX) experience with strong surfacing skills for working from industrial and product design geometry
- Strong GD&T and datum scheme design; able to build and defend tolerance stack-ups that include fixture and process contributors
- Experience selecting fixture materials and surface treatments for contact with glass, ceramic, titanium, and flexible circuits
- Rapid prototyping skills (3D printing, basic machining) and comfort in a workshop
- Able to read and challenge vendor DFMs and measurement reports (CMM, optical) and to run a DFM loop to closure
- Comfort on a factory floor, in a lab, and in a design studio. This role requires physical presence where the work happens.
- Willingness to travel up to 30 percent, including internationally to manufacturing partner sites in Asia
Nice to have:
- Wearable, miniaturized, or high precision consumer electronics with variant configurations
- Experience with adhesive dispensing, pressure sensitive adhesive placement, hot bar and laser soldering, flex bending, or cover glass assembly stations
- Vision and inspection fixture design, including camera and lighting integration
- Experience taking semi automated equipment to fully automated equipment with Asian equipment suppliers
- Working knowledge of DOE, FA, and PFMEA sufficient to partner with Process Engineering
- Working proficiency in Mandarin or another language relevant to manufacturing partner regions
