Position Overview
This position will support the Microsoft SQL database environment, focusing on database creation, performance, maintenance, troubleshooting, and overall reliability. This role partners with application owners to support daily operations, resolve issues, manage resources, and plan for future database upgrades.
Major Activities (Typical Duties/Responsibilities)
- Under the guidance the incumbent will assist with and progressively develop proficiency in the following areas:
- Perform database backup, recovery, and restoration activities.
- Maintain database security and integrity controls while monitoring system availability and performance.
- Support database creation, cloning, migration, and recovery processes.
- Develop an understanding of organizational operational procedures and best practices.
- Assist with systems environment management, including:
- Monitoring database health and performance.
- Supporting database upgrade planning and implementation.
- Managing backup and recovery processes.
- Assisting with system environment transition planning and execution.
- Provide occasional off-hours and weekend support as required to support business operations and system availability.
- Develop, maintain, and enhance Windows and SQL PowerShell scripts, SSIS packages, and SSRS reports.
- Occasional off hours or weekend support may be required.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by management.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server administration, including database integrity, security, performance monitoring, and maintenance.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve SQL Server database issues related to performance, connectivity, blocking, deadlocks, security, and data integrity.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with peers, technical teams, and IT leadership.
- Ability to identify, analyze, and implement database performance tuning improvements through query optimization, indexing strategies, and the use of monitoring and diagnostic tools.
- Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server architecture, standards, concepts, administrative tools, and best practices.
- Understanding of database backup and recovery methodologies, high availability solutions, business continuity planning, and disaster recovery strategies.
- Familiarity with IT operational processes, change management practices, and technology service delivery frameworks.
- Experience supporting and maintaining databases within complex enterprise environments.
- Working knowledge of Windows Server operating systems, PowerShell scripting, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
- Experience working with cloud-based database platforms and technologies, including administration, monitoring, and migration activities.
- Ability to document technical procedures, maintain system records, and adhere to established operational standards.
- Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data; define problems; establish facts; and develop sound conclusions and recommendations.
- Ability to interpret and apply a variety of technical, operational, and administrative instructions while effectively managing both abstract and concrete variables.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts, system architecture, operational plans, governance requirements, risks, and recommendations to technical staff, management, and customers.
- Strong verbal, written, presentation, and documentation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy, integrity, and quality.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development in emerging database and cloud technologies.
Physical Abilities
- Sufficient fine motor skills for the use of computers, calculators with an ability to withstand repetitive keyboarding for extended periods of time.
- Visual and communications ability adequate to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Ability to kneel, bend and twist at the waist on an occasional basis.
- Ability to reach below shoulder height with regular frequency (desk position) and at or above shoulder height on occasion.
- Ability to push, pull, carry and lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds on a regular basis, and greater weights on an occasional basis.
- Ability to travel by vehicle or aircraft, and ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to pass a background and drug screening.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Ability to work a 4x10 work schedule (Monday through Thursday) and occasional off hours/weekend hours if necessary
- Must have identification compliant with the Real ID Act at time of hire.
- Must be able to obtain Department of Energy access badge.
Preferred Qualifications
- Technical certification in Microsoft SQL Server 2019, SQL Server 2022, or equivalent current database technologies preferred.
Pay Range: $81,078.00 $149,247.00
