Zero Waste Consultant & Lead Auditor

Starting salary: $50,000 annually based on a 24 hour workweek

HSR Zero Waste is looking for a Zero Waste Consultant & Lead Waste Auditor to help deliver and grow our Zero Waste consulting work across Canada.
This is a hands on consulting role that combines technical work field work sorting waste, client relationships, field leadership and business development. One week you may be leading a waste audit and supervising a team of sorters. Another may involve interviewing facility staff, analyzing findings, preparing a client presentation, supporting a facility through Zero Waste certification, or following up with prospective clients to move new projects forward.
We are looking for someone who can think critically, communicate clearly, work independently and build strong relationships with clients while representing HSR Zero Waste professionally.

What You Will Do
Waste Audits & Assessments
• Plan and coordinate waste audits and Zero Waste assessments
• Travel to client facilities and lead onsite audit fieldwork
• Train and supervise waste sorters during characterization audits
• Conduct facility walkthroughs and stakeholder interviews
• Analyze quantitative and qualitative audit findings
• Identify practical opportunities for waste reduction, reuse and improved diversion
• Prepare professional reports and recommendations
• Develop clear, visual PowerPoint presentations that communicate findings without relying on word heavy slides
• Present findings and recommendations directly to clients
Zero Waste Consulting & Certification
• Support organizations in developing and implementing Zero Waste programs
• Guide clients through the Zero Waste certification process
• Review documentation, identify gaps and help clients move certification requirements forward
• Conduct interviews and gather information needed to understand facility operations and material flows
• Maintain regular communication with clients and keep projects progressing
• Support implementation and follow up work arising from audits, assessments and Zero Waste plans
Business Development & Client Relationships
This is not a passive sales support position. The successful candidate will be expected to help build the consulting portfolio.
• Follow up with prospective and existing clients to move opportunities forward
• Conduct initial conversations to understand client needs and identify appropriate services
• Participate in targeted outreach to prospective clients and sectors
• Help prepare project scopes and proposals using HSR standards and templates
• Follow up on proposals and opportunities through to a decision
• Reconnect with past clients and identify appropriate follow on work
• Identify additional opportunities within existing client relationships
• Support development of Zero Waste certification opportunities
• Work with the President on larger, strategic or nonstandard opportunities
• Maintain accurate client, project and opportunity information within HSR systems
What We Are Looking For
You do not need to arrive knowing HSR's audit methodology or Zero Waste certification system. We can teach those.
We are more interested in finding someone with strong professional judgment, curiosity, communication skills and the ability to take increasing ownership of client projects.
The ideal candidate will bring:
• Relevant experience in environmental consulting, waste management, environmental programs, auditing, facilities, resource management or a related field
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills
• Strong Excel and data analysis abilities
• Excellent professional writing and communication skills
• Confidence conducting interviews and speaking directly with clients
• Ability to translate complex findings into concise reports and highly visual presentations
• Strong organization and project coordination skills
• Comfort leading field teams and working hands on with waste, recycling and organics
• Interest in client relationship development and business development
• Willingness and ability to travel for projects across Canada
• A valid driver's licence
Experience conducting waste audits, environmental assessments, Zero Waste programs or certification projects is an asset, but is not required for the right candidate.
AI and Digital Tools
HSR uses AI assisted and digital tools to improve the efficiency and quality of our consulting work.
The successful candidate should be comfortable using modern AI and productivity tools to support research, analysis, meeting documentation, report development, presentations and other professional workflows.
We are looking for someone who uses these tools to work more efficiently while maintaining professional judgment, confidentiality, accuracy and accountability for the final work.
About the Position
The position will initially be structured around a 24 hour workweek with a starting annual salary of $50,000.
The role is intended to grow alongside HSR Zero Waste's consulting portfolio, with the opportunity to increase hours, responsibility and compensation as workload and business development support that growth.
The schedule requires flexibility. Waste audits may involve early starts, consecutive field days and travel outside Metro Vancouver. Other work may be completed from your home office in Metro Vancouver area, HSRs Port Coquitlam office and, where appropriate, remotely.
About HSR Zero Waste
HSR Zero Waste is an established Zero Waste consulting firm supporting organizations across Canada.
Our work includes waste audits and assessments, Zero Waste planning, implementation support, training and certification. We work with commercial properties, healthcare facilities, institutions, hospitality, retail, industrial operations and other organizations seeking to improve how materials are managed.
Our approach goes beyond measuring what ends up in a waste container. We work with clients to understand how materials move through their operations, identify practical opportunities for reduction and reuse, improve diversion systems and build a realistic path toward Zero Waste.
